Kunda Foods is a mission‐driven enterprise that leverages the power of food transformation to create inclusive, equitable and sustainable development across East Africa. At its core, Kunda Foods focuses on three interconnected pillars, creating value through fair and innovative sourcing, delivering value via culturally resonant experiences, and defining a new narrative around Africa, multiculturalism and complex identities. Kunda Foods delivers impact through its first brand Kunda Gelato, a premium artisanal gelato brand and Kunda Lab, an embedded innovation lab.

Kunda Gelato aims to celebrate the diverse heritages of East Africa and the Caribbean through innovative, high-quality gelato flavors served in a multi-sensory brand experience. By fusing cultures, Kunda enables discovery and human connection, while adding value to the community through ethical sourcing and relationships with local partners. 

Starting with Kigali in 2023, Kunda Gelato is now expanding to Nairobi in 2025

LAB

Kunda Lab is our internal innovation engine fully integrated in Kunda Foods, to scale innovation in food transformation, deepen storytelling through flavour, and equip growers, suppliers, producers and entrepreneurs with tools to reclaim economic and narrative power while contributing to solving local societal challenges. 

Until now, 4 projects have started in Kunda lab: 

  • The use of cascara (coffee husk waste from the coffee industry) in our product offering that ultimately helps to avoid CO2 emissions

  • The partnership with a Rwandan social enterprise and our main fruit supplier to collect our agricultural waste, turn it into biochar and briquettes and distributing it back to our partner farmers

  • The recycling of vanilla beans through transforming the waste and use it in various recipes

  • The creation of new gelato flavours for Kwita Izina (gorilla naming ceremony) to honour the Volcano region and add a new layer to the experience of this ceremony

Our Impact

Value addition and transformation are critical for the development of emerging economies countries as it reduces dependency on imports, increases foreign exchange earnings, and creates skilled employment across sectors. 

Kunda Foods exemplifies this approach by processing fruits, coffee, cascara and other locally sourced ingredients into premium consumer products. 

Our impact is not only embedded, it is our “raison d’etre”. Every decision we take needs to answer the question what does it contribute to ? Our economic sustainability ? The wider economic goals of our countries of operations ? Quality employment ? Employment and training of women ? Longlasting relationships with suppliers ? Environmental impact ?

Economic perspective

  • +200RWF on average  per KG in additional revenue for farmers
  • 5000  kg of raw ingredients (fruits and milk) transformed per year
  • 165’000 USD in import substitution per year

  • 19 youth employed and trained since 2023
